The Johnson Creamery dates to 1913 when Ward and Ellis Johnson began producing milk, butter, cottage cheese, buttermilk, whipping cream, ice cream, and ice. The Johnsons delivered milk and other dairy products directly to homes in Bloomington and beyond, first by horse-drawn wagons and later by its fleet of trucks. Their operations continued until 1987.

In 1995, the old creamery building was restored and adapted as the Johnson Creamery Business Center. The building was restored to the U.S. Department of Interior’s historic standards by Joe Harrell with the guidance of architects Odle, McGuire, and Shook. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Architecturally, the Johnson Creamery Business Center’s distinctive brick exterior and iconic 110' foot tall smokestack make it one of Bloomington’s most recognized landmarks.
