Greenfield is the county seat, and sole city, of Franklin County, Massachusetts. The population was 17,768 at the 2020 census. Greenfield is home to Greenfield Community College, the Pioneer Valley Symphony Orchestra, the Franklin County Fair, and the Green River Festival. The city has a Main Street Historic District containing fine examples of Federal, Greek Revival, and Victorian architecture. Greenfield anchors the Greenfield Town, MA Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Springfield-Greenfield Town, MA Combined Statistical Area. The Greenfield Town, MA Micropolitan Statistical Area (MISA) is located in northwestern Massachusetts, within Franklin County. This area is defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget as a Micropolitan Statistical Area, meaning it centers around a core urban area with a population between 10,000 and 50,000. Specifically, it is anchored by the city of Greenfield, which serves as both the traditional county seat and the most populous community in Franklin County. Geographically, the Greenfield Town MISA lies at the confluence of the Deerfield, Green, and Connecticut Rivers, which have historically shaped its development as a trade and industrial hub. The Green River flows from the north through Greenfield, joining the Deerfield River along the city's southern border, which then merges with the Connecticut River. The Connecticut River flows southward along the boundary with the neighboring town of Montague before continuing its course. Additionally, the Fall River forms the border between Greenfield and the town of Gill to the north. The area is surrounded by hills, including the Pocumtuck Range, part of the northern Metacomet Ridge, with the town center situated on an elevated point above the rivers. The Greenfield Town MISA is part of the larger Springfield-Greenfield Town, MA Combined Statistical Area, which connects it economically and socially to the broader Springfield metropolitan region to the south. Franklin County itself is a rural, nongovernmental county—its government was abolished in 1997—with a total population of 71,029 as of the 2020 census. Greenfield, with a population of 17,456 in 2010, is the largest community in the county by both population and density.Placer AI Ranking: 79th Percentile Nationwide 1,333/6,360 65th Percentile Statewide - 253/758 75th Percentile 15 Mile Radius - 2/4
