Allendale is located in Ottawa County in the state of Michigan with a population of approximately 17,579. It is located within Allendale Charter Township, occupying approximately the northern two-thirds of the township, from the eastern boundary with the Grand River west along Pierce St., north along 75th Ave., then west along Lake Michigan Drive (M-45) to the western boundary of the township. It is a part of the Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland, Michigan combined statistical area, and is an exurb of Grand Rapids, due to its major commuter routes into the city (M-45 and I-96). Allendale is one of the fastest-growing townships in the region but continue to maintain the family-friendly, rural character that the community knows and loves. Allendale is home to the main campus of Grand Valley State University. Grand Valley State University was established in 1960 as Grand Valley State College. Its main campus is situated on 1,322 acres approximately 12 miles west of Grand Rapids. The university also features campuses in Grand Rapids and Holland and regional centers in Battle Creek, Detroit, Muskegon, and Traverse City. GVSU enrolls approximately 25,000 students annually from all 83 Michigan counties and dozens of other states and foreign countries. It employed nearly 4,000 people, with about 1,800 faculty and 2,000 staff. The university has alumni from 50 U.S. states, Canada, and 25 other countries. Grand Rapids is a city in and county seat of Kent County, Michigan. At the 2020 census, the city had a population of 198,893, making it the second-most populous city in Michigan, after Detroit. Grand Rapids is the central city of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area, which has a population of 1,162,950 and a combined statistical area population of 1,502,552. Located 161 miles northwest of Detroit, Grand Rapids is situated along the Grand River approximately 25 miles east of Lake Michigan, it is the economic and cultural hub of West Michigan. A historic furniture manufacturing center, Grand Rapids is home to five of the world's leading office furniture companies and is nicknamed "Furniture City".
