About Aiken
Nestled in the heart of South Carolina, Aiken is a city where history, charm and modern vitality converge, providing an intimately Southern experience. Established in the early 19th century, Aiken has a rich history rooted in equestrian heritage, cultural diversity and a strong sense of community. The city’s renowned training track has produced world-famous thoroughbreds, and its vibrant arts scene celebrates creativity in all forms, blending tradition with innovation.
Aiken’s historical significance includes the historic railroad that connected it to the rest of the country, fostering growth and development. The town’s importance grew further with the arrival of the Winter Colonists—Gilded Age elites who sought refuge from the cold Northeast winters. Their legacy of gracious living and love for equestrian activities continues to influence Aiken today.
Today, Aiken offers a variety of experiences for travelers to enjoy. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore picturesque trails and serene parks, shoppers can discover charming boutiques, culinary aficionados can savor new and exciting flavors, and history enthusiasts can delve into the city’s storied past. Visitors are encouraged to immerse themselves in Aiken’s historic streets and experience the essence of South Carolina’s Thoroughbred Country.
What distinguishes Aiken is its unique way of life—a blend of Southern hospitality, a profound connection to the equestrian world, and a dynamic cultural scene that honors both past and present.
